Monday, September 17, 2012 (40 minutes)

Baseball field, slow. Legs were a bit tired, calves sore afterwards. Otherwise, good.

Saturday, September 15, 2012 (35 minutes)

Wed: 40
Thu: 40
Fri: off
Sat: 35

Outside of my right knee was a bit sore today. Did foam-roller and IT stretches afterwards.

Monday, September 10, 2012 (30 minutes)

Easy on the baseball field.

Thursday, September 6, 2012 (40 minutes)

Easy on the baseball field. My left knee was clicking a lot walking around, but was fine once I started running.

Wednesday, September 5, 2012 (40 minutes)

Achilles has been a problem recently, but was okay today. 40 minutes on the practice field in the morning. It's still hot and muggy here, but wasn't too bad until the sun came up half way through.

Friday, 8/31/12 (40 minutes)

Took it easy on the baseball field. Hot and muggy, as if I were back on the east coast.

Friday 8/30/12 (40 minutes)

40 minutes on the practice field. Half way through I got a pain in my right ankle, on the inside of the ball, but it went away pretty quickly and I finished the run. Early on my legs felt really peppy and I held back a bit. By the end I was ready to be done.

Thursday, 8/29/12 (30 minutes)

First day running in a bit after having Achilles problems, so I took it pretty easy around the baseball field. Felt good.

Wednesday, August 22, 2012 (off)

I'm back from Colorado, where I ran about 10 miles most days on the trails.

Unfortunately, my achilles is sore today. This happened suddenly last night while I was simply walking around. I'll take today off and remember to do the eccentric achilles exercise.

Utah/Colorado trip update

Last weekend I flew out to Salt Lake City to hang out with Will and Ruby and to form Will's support crew for the Trans-Rockies Run. It's been a blast.

On Saturday or Sunday, I forget which, we ran a 15k on some trails near Will's place. I missed the start and had to crap behind a bush, so this race didn't go too well. I felt the altitude pretty strongly as well (six or seven thousand feet, I think).

Then we did the eight-hour drive up to Colorado, where I've been running with The Backcountry Goats (Will works for Backcountry.com, and their emblem is a goat). We did a shakeout on Monday, then today was the first day of the race. I drove the car from the start to the finish, then doubled back about four miles to finish with Will and Peter. Then I doubled back again for the girls team and wound up doing about 11 miles total on the day.

Altitude is tough - I can't really run fast at all up here. Still, I apparently ran better than 7-minute pace today on my way out to meet up with the Goats, assuming the course measurements are to be trusted.

Thursday, August 9, 2012 (15 minutes)

My hamstrings are pretty sore today. The race on Sunday probably started things off, but a 90-minute yoga session on Tuesday is what I conjecture really did them in. I jogged easily for 15 minutes in hopes some blood flow would coax them to better health by the weekend.

Wednesday, August 8, 2012 (45 minutes)

Took it easy, since I went pretty fast yesterday. My right knee had very mild soreness.

Trey Hardee on the decathlon: "No one is healthy. I've been injured since 2003." Or something roughly like that.

I'm also spending too much time in the sun.

Tuesday, August 7, 2012 (45 minutes)

Felt great, with a passage that was long enough, fast enough, and felt good enough to let me know I'm in fine shape for the time being, and the race in the park wasn't indicative of too much. Barefoot on Stanford fields.

Short reflection on yesterday's race

I can name a lot of mitigating factors to yesterday's race - the cold, getting there late and not warming up, the immediate hills and mud, etc. Basically, though, I'm just not very fit and don't know how to race with this body.

I think I'll try to go to a track once a week, except not next week since I'll be in the Colorado wilderness, and do a little timed work just to see how it feels at various paces. I don't really have a sense of that now.

I was sore in my hamstrings today, so I took the day off.

Sunday, August 5, 2012 (5k in 20:20 or so)

I ran a 5k cross country race in the Presidio. It was muddy and hilly, and I didn't feel fit at all. I pretty much just jogged through to third place.

Friday, August 3, 2012 (45 minutes)

I forgot my phone and still haven't succeeded in buying a watch after two attempts (on the first, I locked myself out of Cameron's apartment with my wallet still inside. In the second, I discovered that nowhere I thought I could buy a cheap watch actually had such an implement. I honestly have no idea what stores have what things except for Amazon and Target/Walmart, which have all the things.)

Instead I just ran six laps in each direction on the athletic fields. This seemed fine. It was hot and I didn't feel very energetic.

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday (0, 60, 45 minutes)

Tuesday I let things run late until I just didn't run at all.

Wednesday I was feeling a little guilty about that, and did one hour. My legs felt good and there were some fast sections. Afterwards, I felt a little strain in my right achilles and left arch.

Thursday I did 45 minutes fairly easy in the grove. Felt good, but a little tired.

Monday, July 30, 2012 (40 minutes, strides)

This was a bit over 40 minutes, I think. Jogged from JT's house to Stanford, laps on the field, two long diagonal striders, and jog back. Felt good, but not peppy. Close to 20 minutes on roads/sidewalks going there and back.

Sunday, July 29, 2012 (40 minutes, 2 strides)

Hiking on Friday left me pretty sore, so I took Saturday off. 40 minutes barefoot on the fields at Stanford today, feeling good again. I did two nice striders afterwards, which were good, but felt a little odd since I'm out of the habit.

Friday, July 27, 2012 (40 minutes)

Out-and-back on the trail. Feeling good, but kept the pace slow and easy.

Thursday, July 26, 2012 (40 minutes)

Successfully climbed the tree this morning! There's a tree here that has gained some notoreity, and after four or so attempts I finally made it. Also did my normal morning run.

Wednesday, July 25, 2012 (40 minutes)

My cyberdelinquency the past few days is thankfully not mirrored in meat space. I've been running each day, usually the same out-and-back route that takes roughly 40 minutes, although I haven't been timing it. My legs are definitely a bit sore and weak and tired and out of shape, but only a bit. It almost feels like normal running did back when we were young and the Matt and constantly trying to pull our pants off.

Saturday, July 21, 2012 (40 minutes)

I did 35 minutes around Dennisville yesterday, going up high into the hills and getting lost a bit on the way back down.

Today I found a pretty straightforward trail near the retreat for Rationality Camp. It's paved, but there are dirt paths by the side and road crossings every half mile or so. I felt pretty good - no problems with my feet or sundry related delicates.

Thursday, July 19, 2012 (30 minutes)

Some trail in some park somewhere near Dennisland, which is like Disneyland but free and still with long wait times.

We only went out 15 minutes on the trail and went pretty easy. It was nice to get away from the asphalt for a while.

Wednesday, July 18, 2012 (30 minutes)

Around 123 Fake street. Too concretey. Wound up climbing for a mile up Oakland St before turning around. Felt fine, but I need to get some soft stuff.

Monday, July 16, 2012 (30 minutes)

very easy around the neighborhood near Matt's place. I couldn't find much grass, so I was hyper-sensitive about my footstrike on the asphalt. Katherine's recent story  about the trainer/therapist convincing her to stop heel-striking was weighing on my mind as well. Ideally, I would like to be blissfully ignorant of such considerations as form and let them sort themselves out. I was also sore from yesterday's mountain excursion at Chantry, which I blame on Megumi, who I think didn't get the message about the goal being to run 30 minutes. Regardless, it's nice to have run consecutively a few days. I may take tomorrow off.

The other day I made a bet with Matt that I can run a 5000 PR in the next year, on the track, in an official race. If I do, he'll visit me in Baltimore and if I don't I'll visit him here. This is basically win-win, since I would be happy to visit anyway, but perhaps it will be motivating to remember the way his lard-filled butt jiggled as he sniggered at my foolishness in making the offer.

Tuesday, June 20, 2012 (35 minutes)

Baseball field. It's been pretty easy to access the field recently, actually. I think I might start extending these runs with the goal of running 60 minutes regularly by the end of the summer.

Saturday June 9, 2012 (30 minutes)

Baseball field, a little too late in the morning. It was hot.

Thursday, June 7, 2012 (30 minutes)

Baseball field in the morning. It was actually June 8, but I've been sleeping during the day and staying awake at night to avoid my officemates. They make nasty chewing sounds. I can do this now that there's no school.

Wednesday, June 6, 2012 (30 minutes)

Stupid people using the athletics fields to play sports and enjoy each others' camaraderie and live happy lives. I ran the out-and-back course on the grass medians to avoid baseball players.

Sunday, May 20, 2012 (30 minutes)

Baseball field at night.

With the conclusion of classes and TA duties, I've fallen into a roughly 26-hour schedule. I'm not even sure this actually feels much better than a 24-hour schedule, or if the things I've read about such a schedule make me more prone to follow it. Today I woke up a little after 10pm and went running.

I've been feeling decent on my runs, and I feel a little guilty for not updating this blog.

Saturday, May 5, 2012 (30 minutes)

baseball field at night.

Friday, May 4, 2012 (30 minutes)

I've been running each morning recently, sneaking on to the baseball field. Felt good.

Tuesday, April 24, 2012 (30 minutes)

Practice field barefoot. My legs felt a little crummy, actually. My knees/tissue in that area were a little grumpy.

Monday, April 23, 2012 (30 minutes)

Practice field. It was cold and hailing for a bit, but then let up to be simply cold. That was nice.

Monday, April 16, 2012 (30 minutes)

Hot today, so I waited until sundown to run on the baseball field. I haven't run there barefoot much before. It's actually not very good. There are a couple of good patches, but most of it has grass that's thin and the ground is hard and bumpy underneath. Decent run, though.

It'll be hard to find good places to run now that the sun is up so long and I can't run on the practice field when it's sunny because the artificial dirt heats up too hot.

Sunday, April 15, 2012 (30 minutes)

out and back from the physics building. Felt good, but it was hot today.

Friday, March 30, 2012 (20 baseball field laps)

I forgot my watch, so counted laps. According to Gmaps pedometer this is in the 350 -375m range per lap, which seems about right.

Wednesday, March 28, 2012 (35 minutes)

My usual out-and-back took a long time because it was raining and muddy. Felt okay, but a little tired.

I slept for 12 hours last night, I guess making up for not sleeping much before my seminar presentation yesterday.

Did a bit of core afterwards.

Tuesday, March 27, 2012 (30 minutes)

Practice field. 30 minutes and four diagonal strides.

I felt really choppy today. I felt strong doing the striders, but just feel uncoordinated while running.

March 24 - 26, 2012

Saturday 24th: off

Sunday 25th: 30 minutes in the rain
Monday 26th: 30 minutes on the practice field. Very windy.

Thursday, March 23, 2012 (30 minutes)

Out and back from the physics building. Feeling a bit run down. I'll take tomorrow off.

Sunday, March 18 - Wednesday, March 21 (30 minutes each)

I'm pretty sure I ran 30 minutes each day. I'm surprised I forgot to update for this many days in a row, though.

Saturday, March 17, 2012 (30 minutes)

Out-and-back from the physics building. Felt stiff.

Thursday, March 15, 2012 (30 minutes)

Out-and-back from the physics building. Ran next to a police dog for a bit.

Wednesday, March 14, 2012 (30 minutes)

I burned my feet. Or at least blistered them. It' 76 degrees out, and with the sun shining on the artificial surface field, it got hot enough to damage my relatively-tender feetsies. I didn't realize it until I was done running, though. It may be a little uncomfortable for the next few days.

Tuesday, March 13, 2012 (30 minutes)

Barefoot on the practice field. Felt really good today, and the pace randomly dropped a few times here and there.

Monday, March 12, 2012 (30 minutes)

Did the out-and-back course from my apartment for convenience. Felt fine.

Saturday, March 10, 2012 (30 minutes)

The day off yesterday was a good idea. I felt much better today. 30 minutes around the practice field.

Thursday, March 8, 2012 (30 minutes)

My legs felt a bit crummy today. I did some leg presses in the gym yesterday, so that might have been part of it. Maybe I'll take tomorrow off. Short core work in the gym afterwards.

Wednesday, March 7, 2012 (30 minutes)

I'm pretty sure I ran on Monday as well. My legs felt a little worn today. Core and a little lifting afterwards.

Saturday, March 3, 2012 (30 minutes)

On the practice field with some core afterwards. Felt more tired than yesterday, and I started checking my watch fairly frequently after about 20 minutes.

Thursday and Friday March 1 - 2, 2012 (30 minutes each)

I actually felt really good today. My legs felt ready to go and I ran a bit faster for a while. It's been rainy and muddy for the last couple days, but at least not cold.

Wednesday, February 29, 2012 (30 minutes)

Cold, rainy, thunderstorming. I thought about going in because I was on a small field surrounded by tall metal poles and the current could easily jump if one of them were struck by lightning, but fuck it.

Saturday, February 25, 2012 (30 minutes)

The fields were full all day, so I used my 30-minute route on the grass next to the sidewalks.

Thursday, February 23, 2012 (30 minutes)

Now that sports are in full session, it's more competitive to use the athletic fields. I had to wait for the cover of darkness before sneaking onto the baseball field for 30 minutes.

Also I ate some salad today. Well, I bought some salad at least. Then I poured cheese on it, and ate all the cheese. I got some of the green stuff in my mouth too, but by the time I was done there appeared to be just as much salad as there was at the beginning.

Wednesday, February 22, 2012 (30 minutes)

It was warm today. If it stays this warm I should be able to run barefoot again soon.

I have been having some trouble with a pain in my right ankle, but it didn't bother me for this 30-minutes run.

Monday, February 20, 2012 (30 minutes)

30 easy minutes on the practice field.

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 (30 minutes)

I've had intermittent twitching and tightening in my back since my last update, but not in the last few days. 30 minutes today on the practice field felt good.

Short core session afterwards.

Friday, January 20, 2012 (20 minutes)

20 minutes into the run, I suddenly pulled a muscle in the middle of the left side of my back. Nothing in particular triggered it. I just felt it pull out of nowhere. This has happened to me a few times before. It generally means I need two to four days off. I can't really exercise at all right now, since even a deep breath aggravates it. I wish I knew what was behind this.

Thursday, January 19, 2012 (30 minutes)

I felt really good today - frisky, almost. 15 minutes of core.

Afterwards, I did notice a little soreness in my right Achilles tendon while walking across campus, but I don't feel it as I write now.

Wednesday, January 18, 2012 (30 minutes)

Much too cold for barefoot today, but a nice run nonetheless. 15 minutes of core in the gym afterwards. I suck at pull ups now.

Tuesday, January 17, 2011 (30 minutes)

Barefoot on the practice field. It was just about warm enough for this to be comfortable. 15 minutes of core afterward. Feet and legs felt good.

Wednesday and Thursday, January 11 - 12, 2012 (30 minutes each)

My right ankle felt sore on Tuesday, so I took the day off.

Wednesday I ran on the treadmill in my apartment, and today I went for half an hour on the practice field. I felt fine, but mildly sore. Short core session afterwards.

Monday, January 9, 2012 (30 minutes)

Another good 30 minutes. It was much colder today, but the ground isn't frozen. Short core work and a tiny bit of weights.

Sunday, January 8, 2012 (30 minutes)

Around the practice field in the early afternoon. 50 walking lunges and a little bit of core.

I felt fine, but out of shape. No problems with my feet or with other nice parts of my body.
